Rewriting History

Dan Jones wrote for the Sunday Times Magazine this weekend on George R.R. Martin's pseudo-medieval A Song of Ice and Fire series and the successful HBO television adaptation it inspired. He explores the stylistic connections between the 'sexy, fast-paced, witty and often quite nasty' work of medieval chroniclers such as Chrétien de Troyes; the gory inspirations for the Red Wedding; and the value of a series that pays homage to history without aspiring to faultless accuracy (and inevitably failing).

Dan also underlines the superficial resemblance of Martin's Night's Watch to The Knights Templar, who were guardians of Jerusalem during the crusades, among many other roles. His latest book, The Templars explores the history of the wealthiest, most powerful and most secretive of the crusading-era military orders.

To win a copy of Dan Jones' The Templars, simply retweet or share Head of Zeus' post on social media before 3pm Friday 14th July.
